How to Train for HYROX Without a Sled, SkiErg, or Full Gym
A competition sled, a SkiErg, a rowing machine, a 20kg sandbag. Most people training for their first HYROX race have none of this sitting in their garage, and most commercial gyms don't stock it either. So people either guess at substitutes with no real programming behind them, skip the station entirely and hope race day sorts it out, or pay for a program built for athletes who already have full gym access.
None of those options actually solve the problem. Guessing means you show up to race day undertrained on stations you never actually practiced. Skipping means the same thing, just with less denial about it. And a generic program built around equipment you don't have just wastes the money.
Stations make up 35-40% of your total race time
This is the number that gets missed. HYROX splits roughly 35-40% of total finish time into the 8 stations themselves, not the running between them. Train only running, and you're leaving more than a third of your race time unaddressed.
The fix is a real substitution, not a shrug
Every official HYROX station has a legitimate substitute that trains the same movement pattern and energy system, it just needs to be mapped deliberately instead of improvised on the spot. A sled push substitute needs to load the same posterior-chain drive pattern under similar fatigue, not just "be tiring." A SkiErg substitute needs to hit the same upper-body pulling endurance, not just "involve arms."
This is why Station Zero maps all 8 official stations to three equipment tiers, from pure bodyweight and household items up to a normal commercial gym without HYROX-specific machines. Whatever you actually have access to, there's a version of the full station list that trains the right pattern.
Test it, don't guess it
The other half of this is knowing where you actually stand. A one-time benchmark test in week one, then a re-test every month, tells you whether your substitute training is closing the gap or not, instead of hoping it is. Our free Race Time Predictor is a fast way to see where your time is currently going, station by station, before you commit to anything.
No sled. No excuse. Just the right substitute for whatever you've actually got.
